Learning with Horses

Urban Horse Project's Learning with Horses program helps people discover new ways to communicate and cooperate. This way of teaching goes beyond handling horses to a way to teach critical thinking, empathy and boundaries.

Our Learning with Horses program is based on the award-winning Cartier Equine Assisted Learning model and curriculum. Children and youth attend weekly training activities that each build on the learnings of the previous weeks.

Each week, after an introduction to the day's learning objective, children and youth work in small teams with horses through exercises and games that require communication, teamwork, problem-solving and confident leadership.  There is no riding involved.

Our calm and experienced horses provide instant, honest feedback in the process. Our trained EAL facilitators stay close to the action and support the learning.

The opportunity to be with the horses and do self-development and reflect on our experiences is very important. I’ve seen real changes in the youth who come out regularly — an ability to do new things and learn to work in teams.
